A steady influx of entries for the Euro Steel Run The Rivers trail runs on 28 and 29 January has inspired the Sani Spoors organisers to build on the popular changes made to the race routes last year.
With 426 entries confirmed between the full distance trail run and the shorter Lite version, 77% of the capped total of 550 entries have already been snapped up as the event cements its reputation as one of the region’s most popular trail runs.
2022 women’s champion Kerry-Anne Walton has her entry in, eager to try and retain the title she won on the new trail layout in January.
Event organiser Pierre Horn says that the feedback from the changes rung to the trails for the last event has encouraged them to retain the new innovations and the strive to make small changes that will give the runners more of what they enjoyed most last year.
“The participants last year really appreciated the convenience of starting and finishing at the same place, and the start venue at Swartberg Road bridge under the trees was also very popular,” said Horn.
“The new trail route we used for the runners last year definitely enhanced the Berg experiences and made it memorable,” he added. “Where we can, we will try to make small changes that offer new perspectives of the Berg escarpment.”
Horn said that the trail building team had been hard at work improving and elevating many of the bridges on the route, making them easier and safer to manage, and creating new Berg mountain view sites.
“We really enjoy all the feedback we get from the runners, and we try hard to build on that,’ said Horn. “Where we can offer a new view or a chance to experience the landscape and all the plants that are blooming at that time, we know that the runners will appreciate that.
Horn stressed that the 550 runner cap was in place to safeguard the quality of the raceday experience for every single entrant, and urged runners keen to enjoy the trail running event on the last weekend of January to get their entries in before they sell out.
